c. How does your environment impact your relationship with the Queer community? Take into consideration any physical or virtual limitations.
d. Pick a country and research the rights affecting the Queer community. How has this changed over the course of your lifetime? Pick another country and do the same exercise. How do the two countries differ? Explain why there might be similarities or differences between the two countries.
e. With reference to the text, explain how the author’s social, cultural, political, and environmental contexts, mediated their perception of their Queer identity.
2. Describe how transcultural and translinguistic expressions of Queerness allow for the (re)emergence of Queer identities.
a. How has the demographic make-up of your local area changed? Find the most recent official statistics for your local area and comment on how the demographic landscape has changed over the course of your lifetime. If possible, what is the proportion of Queer-identified population in your local area?
b. Choose two familiar languages or language varieties and research corresponding translations of terms describing Queer identities. Now find corresponding translations of terms used by the Queer community. Are the translations of these terms equivalent? What challenges did you face finding the most appropriate translation?
c. With reference to the text, explain how the author’s cultural and linguistic expressions of Queerness differ from your own understanding of Queerness.
3. Privilege emerging traditional and Indigenous understandings of Queer identities while challenging the notion of universality in Queer identity models developed within Western academic frameworks.
a. Research the traditional and Indigenous peoples of your local area.
b. Choose a traditional or Indigenous culture and research a particular facet of Queer identity or expression. Consider differences and similarities with your own cultural background.
c. Choose a traditional or Indigenous culture and consider the impacts of colonisation and imperialism on Queer identities and expression.
d. Choose a historical or contemporary Queer identity model (i.e. Cass identity model, Fassinger’s model of gay and lesbian identity development) and research the genealogy of this model. Consider how traditional or Indigenous knowledge has been included or excluded from this model.
e. With reference to the text, explain how traditional and indigenous understandings of Queer identities are included or excluded in your community.
4. Think critically about the impacts of (multi-)marginalisation among members of the Queer community who occupy intersecting marginalisation in society.
a. Discuss diversity, equity, and inclusion within the context of your community.
b. Research Queer physical or virtual spaces in your local area. Describe each of these spaces. How many of these spaces cater to marginalised communities?
c. Consider visible and invisible representation of intersectional Queer identities in the media. Choose three source texts from the same medium (e.g. book, movie, television programme, online article, social media) and describe the type of identities represented. Explain why some identities are more visible than others based on the source text.
d. Identify an intersectional community within your local area and propose human infrastructure and/or services that can be developed to support this community.
e. With reference to the text, explain how intersectional communities experience multi-marginalisation in your community.
5. Engage individual lived experiences and perspectives as a vehicle for effective allyship within and outside the Queer community.
a. Discuss your understanding of what it means to be an effective ally.
b. Choose a charitable service provider within your local area and discuss what you can do to provide support.
