Names are more than just identifiers; they carry the weight of identity, culture, and resilience. This seminar explores the profound ways in which names shape personal and collective realities while navigating cultural and systemic power dynamics.

In this conversation between Dr. Javeria K. Shah (Royal Central School of Speech and Drama) and Dr. Chris McAuley (UC Santa Barbara), they discuss the weight of “imposed identity” and the resilience to overcome it.

Dr. Javeria K. Shah is the author of two books with LPP: My Name Is: Is Your Name a Gift or a Burden? and Imposed Identities and British Further Education: The Experiences of Learners Classified as ‘Low Ability’. She has another book in development as well: My Hijab Journey: Merging Spirituality, Activism, Style, and Identity Through the Hijab.

Panelists:

  • Javeria K. Shah, Royal Central School of Speech and Drama
  • Dr. Chris McAuley, University of California, Santa Barbara (and Black Studies Collection Editor at LPP)
  • Recorded live on December 4, 2025
