DOI: https://doi.org/10.52843/cassyni.nrvxy7

In this conversation between Chris McAuley, Black Studies Collection Editor at Lived Places Publishing and Valandra, author of Black Family Enterprise and Community in Segregated North Omaha: The Pratt Street House, they examine the rich complexities and harsh realities of life for Black families living in a segregated working-class community in North Omaha, where Valandra spent her summers as a child and later resided with her grandparents. They cover themes of intergenerational mutual aid and caregiving, entrepreneurship, spirituality, and the impacts of the legacy of race and economic inequities.

Panelists:

  • Valandra, University of Arkansas – Fayetteville (jointly appointed Professor in the School of Social Work and African and African American Studies)
  • Chris McAuley, UC Santa Barbara (and Black Studies Collection Editor at Lived Places Publishing)
